Vice President

Lasse Ostebo Lovik from Norway has an impressive academic background which includes four and a half years toward a Master’s degree in Law and two years of studies in mathematics and physics. This interdisciplinary foundation supports his analytical approach to governance, policy interpretation, and strategic decision making. It has provided insight into legal systems and organizational regulation, which is critical for volunteer-driven chess communities.

His competitive credentials include International Master title which he holds since 2017, while he won the FIDE Master title in 2009. He has represented Norway in numerous tournaments and attended NTG with elite players including Magnus Carlsen and Jon Ludvig Hammer, gaining firsthand insight into high-performance pathways and athlete development. He has also coached at club, regional, and national team levels, working with notable students such as Aryan Tari.

Serving as the President of the Norwegian Chess Federation since January 2025, he has direct, practical insight into the challenges and opportunities facing European chess today. He understands the complexities of balancing elite ambitions with grassroots development, managing limited resources while maintaining high standards, and representing diverse stakeholder interests within a democratic governance structure. Under his leadership, the Federation achieved a record financial year in 2025, reversing a multi-year pattern of budget deficits through strategic planning, transparent communication with members, and sustainable decision making.

Previously, he served as Chair of the Norwegian Youth Federation from 2022 to 2024, where he championed inclusive development, tournament innovation, and capacity building for young players. Before that, he spent six years as Tournament Director for the Federation, gaining operational insight into event management, regulatory frameworks, and youth engagement.

At the local level, he chairs Stavanger Youth Chess Club, a thriving organization with around 100 members, focusing on mentorship, community building, and sustainable club structures. In March 2025 alone, he helped organising 20 tournaments, including regional championships, national girls and women’s championships, and events as part of the national “SkoleSjakken” project.

His professional journey reflects a lifelong dedication to chess and its communities. Norway’s active membership in the European Chess Union and the Nordic Chess Federation has allowed him to engage in regional collaboration, share best practices, and develop cross-border initiatives. He has built networks and cross-cultural understanding essential for effective international governance.

Beyond formal roles, Lovik has contributed to the global chess community as a volunteer with lichess.org from 2016 to 2024, focusing on development, anti-cheating efforts, community moderation, and platform integrity. He has held positions with local clubs, student sports organizations, and Norway Chess, bringing experience in digital platforms, hybrid event management, and the technological evolution of chess.

As a Women in Chess Advocate, he has consistently worked to promote gender equality, broaden participation, and remove barriers within the chess community. His commitment to inclusivity reflects a belief that chess should be accessible, welcoming, and empowering for all.

Lovik brings a younger perspective to chess administration, combining respect for tradition with understanding of evolving needs. He is committed to strengthening youth development pathways, enhancing fair play infrastructure, and ensuring European Chess Union policies serve federations of all sizes.
